| ADAPTATION: Cool season areas such as northeastern
U.S. and the Temperate Zone with careful management.
The only usage in the south is on
closely managed golf greens.

Adaptation: Bent grasses grow best in
the high moisture parts of the north and can extend into the transitional area with lots
of watering on fertile soils. This grass species forms a thick dense turf and can be
closely mown and is used for better lawns and on golf courses fairways and tees. They have
some salt tolerance and are used along coastlines of the upper Pacific and Atlantic
oceans. Bent grasses are insect and disease prone especially in areas that below the
cooler north and require close supervision for these problems.
Colonial bent grass can be
grown in the transitional area on golf courses under constant programs of fungicide
applications, irrigation, fertilization, and insect control, with
de-thatching and mowing
schedules.
Bentgrasses require adequate air circulation
to properly grow. This is why you often see fans located on
golf greens so as to move air across the grass. Some newer
methods of "air-ating" the grass involve blowing air into
the soil drain fields when the water drainage capability is not
needed. Bents will do okay even in high shade situations
(50-60% shade tolerance) as long as the air and drainage is
adequate.
